The era of the physical game disc is officially coming to a close.
With major players like Sony recently announcing plans to halt physical disc production for new PlayStation games by early 2028, the gaming industry is fully embracing a digital future.
For many fans, losing the ability to trade, lend, or display their favourite titles is disappointing. But there is a brilliant silver lining.
This digital shift is sparking a massive resurgence in the retro console market.
Classic cartridges and vintage systems are becoming highly prized treasures, allowing dedicated players to preserve the tactile magic of physical media.
Hold onto your prized gaming discs and older generation consoles. You can continue to enjoy your favourite games for a long time (as long as they don’t require an online server to play them). For me I’ll keep collecting Playstation 1 & 2 games and the odd Atari cartridge.
