Australians love smartphones…but at the same time are looking for more opportunities to disconnect.
That’s one of the findings of a study from HMD Global that also revealed that Australians spend 16.45 hours per week on average looking at their screen – which is the equivalent of watching the first two seasons of Game of Thrones back-to-back.
With mobile usage rising 88 percent over the past decade so to has the need to take a break and the study showed that 28 percent of Australians take a digital detox often.
One way to help with that digital detox is to use a feature phone. A feature phone simply has less of the features you expect to find on many smartphones, so you’re less likely to spend as much time on them.

Privacy/Security:
57.2% (over half) of Aussies worry about getting scammed through their phone
76.3% of Aussies feel that knowing their phone is secure is important to them
Digital Wellbeing:
Aussies spend an average of:
163 minutes on average touching their phone each day
141 minutes looking at their screen each day
135 minutes on your phone (including games, calls, exercises, texts)
96 minutes browsing social media
144 minutes using their smartphone in any way
88.2% of Aussies believe their phone usage has increased by some % in the past decade
On average Aussies have increased their phone usage by 77% in the past decade
27.5% (1 in 4) of Aussies often take a digital detox
On average, Aussies are spending 110 more minutes on their phone than holding their child’s hand
Sustainability/Durability:
76.5% of Aussies want to keep their smartphone for longer
56% of Aussies wish they didn’t have to upgrade their phone so often
52.2% of Aussies make an effort to buy products that help the environment
47.1% of Aussies won’t update their phone because they don’t think it does anything
Cost:
81.4% of Aussies think that smartphones are expensive
