Selling on eBay just got a whole lot cheaper for casual sellers.

Announced last week this major policy shift means everyday Aussies can now list and sell their pre-loved items entirely fee-free on eBay.com.au for up to $25,000 in annual sales.

New research commissioned by the e-commerce giant reveals that 80% of Australians have sellable items just sitting around the house, with the average household harboring about 15 unused goods. On average, Aussies estimate they could pocket nearly $1,500 by clearing out their clutter—amounting to a staggering $32 billion nationwide.

Previously, slicing into those profits with selling fees was a major roadblock. The data shows that 34% of Aussies have been deterred from listing items online due to extra costs, while 55% admitted they would be far more likely to start selling if fees were eliminated altogether.

The desire for a side-hustle is particularly strong among younger generations. Over half of Millennials (59%) and Gen Z (53%) admit to experiencing “retail regret” over past purchases, with 61% and 68% respectively viewing online resale as a viable way to make extra money.

To complement the fee drop, eBay is introducing a range of upgrades to simplify the user experience:

  • AI-Powered Listings: Advanced tools that help sellers generate descriptions and create accurate listings in minutes.

  • Integrated Shipping: Labels purchased directly through eBay that offer discounted rates, built-in tracking, and printerless dropping options.

  • Secure Transactions: Enhanced buyer protection and greater transparency around automated payouts.

For high-volume users, anyone who exceeds the $25,000 annual threshold will automatically transition to a Pro Starter plan, keeping the ecosystem scalable for growing small businesses.

With the financial barrier officially removed, there has never been a better time to sell unwanted goods and make a few extra dollars.
