Telstra warns on callback scams

Australians are being warned about a rapid rise in callback scams, where cyber criminals trick victims into making the phone call themselves.

New research from Telstra shows callback scams now account for forty-five per cent of all reported email scams, up sharply from just twenty-nine per cent last year.
Fraudsters send fake billing alerts, texts, or calendar invites, directly exploiting our natural preference to resolve urgent account issues over the phone.

Telstra cyber security expert Darren Pauli urges all Australians to verify sender details independently.
“The best tip is to remain vigilant and skeptical. Question everything. Don’t call the number in a message, instead verify through the company’s official channels.”
