Whether the Wi-FI is free or fee-based, you need to be aware of the risks involved when using public Wi-Fi hotspots. \u00a0Paying for network access is no safer than free Wi-Fi.\u00a0 Anyone else paying to use that network can potentially see what you are doing.<\/p>\n

When you use a public network you need to remember it is public. That means that whatever you are doing on your computer is potentially visible to others.\u00a0 Others may be able to see what websites you are visiting, read your email, and see any passwords that you enter.\u00a0 However, there are some steps you can take to minimize the security risk.<\/p>\n

Tips to Minimize Risks while on WiFi<\/strong><\/p>\n

1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Use a firewall.\u00a0 This can provide some extra protection.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Choose settings for a public network when you connect.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Turn off sharing.<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) if possible.<\/p>\n

5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Assume that what you are doing is visible to others.<\/p>\n

6.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Don\u2019t use public Wi-Fi for banking or any financial transactions, including\u00a0shopping.<\/p>\n

7.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If you must enter credit card information, make sure the web address for the site starts with \u201chttps\u201d, indicating that it is a secure site.<\/p>\n

8.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Be careful about conducting business on a public Wi-Fi.\u00a0 Confidential information could be visible to others.<\/p>\n

9.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Disable the wireless feature if you are not using it.<\/p>\n

10.\u00a0\u00a0 Consider encrypting sensitive files on your laptop.<\/p>\n

11.\u00a0\u00a0 Consider that many web mail sites are not secure.\u00a0 Even if you are not reading your mail, your computer may automatically download it and potentially allow others to see it.<\/p>\n

12.\u00a0\u00a0 Make sure you are using a real hotspot.\u00a0 Cybercriminals have set up phony hotspots to steal information.<\/p>\n

13.\u00a0\u00a0 Change any passwords you used while on a public Wi-Fi once you are on a secure network.<\/p>\n

Your best bet is to be overly cautious on any public Wi-Fi.\u00a0 Use it for casual web surfing, but don\u2019t conduct business or financial transactions while on a public network.<\/p>\n
