Many applications are designed to launch automatically when you turn on your computer, and if you have ten apps running in the background that you didn’t ask for, your RAM is being cannibalised before you have even opened a browser.
For Windows users, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the Task Manager and check the Startup tab to disable anything unnecessary. On macOS, head over to System Settings, then General, and look at your Login Items to trim the list.

While you are optimising your workflow, address your browser clutter. If you are a tab hoarder, keeping dozens of windows open for days at a time, you are likely maxing out your memory. Close the tabs you are not actively using, or use a tab suspender extension to put inactive pages to sleep. Finally, never underestimate the power cycle. Simply restarting your computer clears out temporary cache files and forces your operating system to stop runaway processes that might be hogging system resources.

Moving on to maintenance, remember that a full hard drive is a slow hard drive. If your drive is nearing capacity, your operating system will struggle to find space to write temporary files, leading to significant slowdowns. Aim to keep at least 15% to 20% of your total storage free by deleting large, unused files or uninstalling programmes you no longer need. While you are at it, run a scan with your preferred security software to check for malware and ensure your OS is fully updated, as those updates often contain patches that optimise how your machine handles resources.

If software maintenance doesn’t solve the issue, it may be time to look at the hardware.
If you are still running your operating system on an older mechanical hard drive, replacing it with a Solid State Drive (SSD) is the single most impactful upgrade you can make, often costing between $80 and $200. It can make a five-year-old computer feel brand new. If you frequently run heavy applications, bumping your RAM up to 16GB, which typically costs between $60 and $150, is usually the sweet spot for modern performance.

Of course, if your machine is over five to seven years old, hardware limitations will eventually hit a ceiling, and a new machine—which will run you upwards of $1,500—might be the only viable solution.

Before you consign your slow computer to the scrap heap, it’s worth trying a few simple, actionable steps to restore some pep to your setup.

[825
2636
post-9443","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-tips-2","tag-slow-computer-fix
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 -
