Video Games consoles are effectively powerful computers so are generally not very energy efficient, however things are changing.
A new shutdown energy saving mode update for Xbox Series X & S consoles will see these consoles using 20 times less power than the “sleep” power option.
While in shutdown energy saving mode, the console can still receive overnight updates to system, games and apps.
XBox says that for every two Xbox consoles that use the energy saving option they will save the carbon equivalent of one tree planted and grown for a decade.
Right now the energy saving feature is only available to xbox insiders, however all users can look forward to the update soon.
Here are some general tips on saving power with your games consoles.
- Use energy-saving mode: Both Xbox and PlayStation have energy-saving modes that reduce the amount of power consumed when the console is not in use. This can be activated through the system settings on the console.
- Turn off your console: When not in use, it’s best to turn off your console instead of leaving it in standby mode. This helps to reduce the amount of energy consumed, as well as extending the life of the console.
- Unplug accessories: Unplugging accessories such as controllers, charging cables, and other peripherals when not in use can help reduce the amount of energy consumed.
- Use automatic shut-off: Xbox and PlayStation both have automatic shut-off features that allow you to set a time for the console to turn off after a certain period of inactivity. This is a great way to save energy and reduce your electricity bill.
- Adjust display settings: Adjusting the display settings on your console, such as reducing the brightness or turning off dynamic backgrounds, can help reduce the amount of power consumed.
By following these simple steps, you can save power and reduce your electricity bill. It’s a win-win for both your wallet and the environment!
