Just as the National Broadband Network appears to be making real progress with rollouts over the last couple of months, a mobile broadband device is being introduced this month that will outperform any NBN connection available today.
Telstra (thanks to technology partners Qualcomm, Netgear and Ericsson) recently unveiled the world’s first gigabit class LTE mobile device to be commercially available.
It’s a portable mobile broadband hotspot called the Nighthawk M1 that pushes beyond the current limits of wired broadband services with up to 1Gigabit download speeds and uplaod speeds of up to 150Gigabits per second. (image to the left was an actual speed test I witnessed).
What do these speeds translate to in the real world?
- Download a typical 3.5MB song in a fraction of a second
- Download a 20MB PowerPoint presentation in as little as one second
- Download a 300MB one hour TV episode in as little as sixteen seconds
- Download a 3GB HD Movie in as little as 3 minutes
As the Nighthawk M1 hits the market these amazing speeds will only be available within a small radius of Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne CBDs and into regional areas as demand grows however the technology within the device also promises better performance on current 4G mobile (Telstra) networks.
